6 Accessories For Unexpected Weather

Have you ever heard the phrase “life is what happens when we’re busy making other plans”? Whoever coined that phrase must have also been talking about the weather systems. It can often feel like no matter how much faith we place in a forecast one minute, the weather can go the complete opposite direction the next.

In preparation for moments like these, it’s important to have a few essentials in your car or in your bag at all times – strong rain umbrellas in case of showers, hats and extra sunscreen in case the sun is extra hot, thick socks and a jacket in case things suddenly take a turn for the chilly.

Beyond that, is it possible to be truly prepared for unexpected weather patterns? Maybe and maybe not, depending on where you live – however, investing in a few of these innovative accessories will help ensure you’re caught off guard by the weather much less frequently:

A Versatile, Compact Umbrella

Regardless of where you live, having at least one or two rain umbrellas is a no-brainer. Whether you’re using them to protect you from delicate rain or intense shine, umbrellas are a must. If you can’t find one small enough to fit in your backpack or everyday bag, keep one in your car or by your front door so you don’t forget to bring it with you before you head out.

While cheap umbrellas can be found anywhere, there are many benefits to spending a little more on a really good one. Well-made umbrellas are not only waterproof, they’re wind-proof so you don’t have to worry about it flipping inside out or coming apart in the case of strong winds.

Things To Keep Your Hands Warm

When you’re stepping outside in the middle of winter, there’s nothing more frustrating than barely being able to work your phone or struggling to pick things up because your hands are so intensely cold.

Having a selection of hand-warming accessories in the cold months is absolutely essential to ensuring your comfort and your health. If your standard pair of waterproof gloves makes it hard for you to use your phone, opt for a new pair that’s designed with special pads on the fingertips to allow you to use touch screens.

You may also want to look for hand-warming packets that you can slip inside your gloves for a little extra help defrosting.

Portable Chargers and Power Supplies

If you ever happen to get stuck out in public during a dust storm, torrential downpour or blizzard, the last thing you want is for your phone to die – after all, you need to be prepared to potentially call for help, or at least call your family or your job to keep them updated or let them know why you’re running late.

Nowadays, it’s not too difficult to find a selection of portable chargers that you can carry in your bag in case of emergencies like this. If you can, try to keep one in your bag and one in your car, if you drive.

A Sun Hat and Sunblock

Unfortunately, there aren’t many accessories that will immediately and completely cool you off if you find yourself outside in an intense heat wave (besides simply heading inside a building with air conditioning, of course). However, there are a couple of things that can significantly reduce your risk of sunburn or overheating: a high-quality sunhat and a high-SPF tube of sunscreen.

When shopping for sun hats, opt for one with UV protection for a double whammy of defense against the harsh rays of the summer sun. And when it comes to sunscreen, be sure to choose a small portable container with a high SPF (even if you’re the type who insists you “never burn”).

A Mini Bag of Essentials

There are times when a dust storm, downpour or blizzard can get so bad that you’ll need to stop whatever you’re doing and seek cover. In these cases, it’s very smart to be prepared with a small bag of essentials to help you and those around you take care of themselves in the event of being stuck in one place for over an hour.

Things to add to this bag may include painkillers, mini water bottles, snacks, IV patches, foldable ponchos and wound care supplies (in addition to the aforementioned portable charger, of course).

Cold-Weather Fashion Accessories

If you’re stepping out into potentially frigid conditions, you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice your style if you’re looking to stay warm. Packing a balaclava, beanie or headscarf in your bag will ensure you have an extra layer when you need it most – even if you use it to insulate other parts of your body or help out a friend who may not be as prepared as you are.

At the end of the day, it’s best to expect the unexpected when it comes to weather.
