Travel Season on the Srinagar-Leh Highway

The 434-kilometer-long Srinagar Highway is usually blocked for six months a year, from November to May, due to severe snowfall on the mountain routes, particularly the Zozi La pass. In November, snow begins to fall on Zojila Pass. The highway then officially closes on any day in November (usually the 15th), as clearing the snow becomes difficult for BRO.

Then, again, when the winter months pass, the BRO crews resume the snow removal operation in March and restore the damaged roads, bridges, and other components of the roadway. Finally, after finishing the arduous task of clearing snow and repairing roads, bridges, and so on, the BRO announces the opening of the Srinagar Leh Highway, which usually occurs between early and mid-May.

So, what is the best time to go by road from Srinagar to Leh?

As a result, the optimum months to travel from Srinagar to Ladakh through Kargil are June to October. If the highway opens in late April or early May, the roads are often in poor condition and only improve as the season progresses due to frequent BRO repair work.

The road situation stabilises by the end of May, and the monsoon arrives in July, wreaking havoc in the lower hills connecting Srinagar to Jammu and farther to other areas of India.

Is it safe to travel from Srinagar to Leh during the monsoon season?

Landslides are almost unavoidable during the rainy season, causing road bottlenecks on occasion. The Amarnath Yatra is in full swing in July and August, so expect heavy traffic and rush hour on the highway between Jammu and Srinagar and Kargil. The military’s dominance grows in July and August due to the security of pilgrims on the Amarnath Yatra.

Driving via Zoji La Pass in July and August is nearly impossible, especially if it is raining or has poured in the previous days, but it is far superior to Rohtang Pass on the Manali-Leh Highway, which becomes a living nightmare during monsoon season.

One may choose to avoid the Srinagar-Leh Highway during the days around India’s Independence Day, i.e., August 15th, when bandhs and strikes are more active. Things have been relatively constant in the last few years (as of 2018).
